HOUSTON -- Sophomore rightfielder Chad Mozingo went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI to help the Rice baseball team overcome two six-run deficits on the way to an 11-8 victory over visiting Dallas Baptist Wednesday evening at Reckling Park in Houston.
Dallas Baptist took advantage of a Rice fielding error and used a big three-run home run by Ryan Thompson to explode for six unearned runs in the top of the third inning. The Owls chipped away for two in the fourth on a two-run homer by Mozingo that extended his hitting streak to a season-best 10 games. The Patriots however went back in front by six again, 8-2, just two innings later on a hit, a pair of walks a sacrifice bunt and a Rice wild pitch.
Rice responded by batting around for four runs in the bottom of the frame. Mozingo drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single to center. Michael Fuda followed with a double to right to put runners on second and third for junior Brock Holt. Holt drove the first pitch he saw out of the park to right for a three-run homer that made the score 8-6.
The Owls completed the rally in the bottom of the eighth. Fuda led off with a single and Holt walked. Jimmy Comerota advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and both scored on a bouncing base hit to right by Rick Hague. Rice had tied the game 8-8 with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the team wasn't finished. Freshman Anthony Rendon singled through the right side and Diego Seastrunk walked to load the bases. Hague scored on a fielder's choice by Daniel Gonzales-Luna that gave the Owls their first lead, 9-8. After a walk to Craig Manuel loaded the bases again, Mozingo provided some insurance runs with a single up the middle that scored the final two and capped a wild night of offense by both teams.
Rice also had some solid pitching down the stretch. Right-hander Travis Wright, who made his NCAA debut last week in the C-USA series-opener vs. Memphis (Mar. 27), came out of the bullpen and delivered 2.2 hitless innings with a career-high four strikeouts. He earned his first career win as the Owls' offense staged its eighth-inning rally. Senior right-hander Jordan Rogers earned his third save of the season by closing the door on the Patriots in the ninth.
With its third win in a row Rice is now 18-7 on the season. Dallas Baptist fell to 16-8 on the year..
Rice next hosts Conference USA rival Tulane in a key three-game league series at Reckling Park this weekend (Apr. 3-5). Game times with the Green Wave are set for 6:30 pm on Friday, 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
