Fifth-round selection
Houston- Righthanded pitcher Davion Hickson was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth round of Major League Baseball's Draft on Monday in Atlanta, Georgia.
Hickson was a second-team, All-AAC selection in his first season as a starter in 2025 and led Rice in innings (73.0), strikeouts (90), ERA (3.82), Opps batting average (.220), and fewest home runs (5). He was fifth in the AAC in season batting average, sixth in strikeouts, and eighth in ERA. His 90 strikeouts were a career high and the most by an Owl since Matt Canterino fanned 121 in 2019, and his 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 49th nationally. He was the first Owls' starter to pitch into the 8th four times in a season since Jon Duplantier in 2016.
He is the seventh Owl to be drafted by the Dodgers and the first since Jeremy Rathjen (11th round) and Matthew Reckling (14th) were selected by Los Angeles in 2012.
This marks the fourth consecutive year Rice has had at least one pitcher taken in the draft and the third consecutive year the Owls have had a pitcher selected in the top seven rounds, joining Justin Long (Atlanta, 7th round 2023) and Parker Smith (Houston, 4th round 2024).
