IRVING -- Rice teammates Amy McClintock and Samantha Conn have been named the Conference USA soccer defensive and offensive player of the week, respectively, for Sept. 11 the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Monday.
Conn scored the game-winning goal as the Owls knocked off No. 8 Texas on Sunday night. The junior midfielder was a late, game-time decision to play after suffering an injury that knocked her out of the 4-0 win over Houston Baptist two days before. She took five shots on the week as Rice remained undefeated at 5-0-1 on the season. It is the first C-USA offensive player of the week award for Conn. The standout from Brazoswood High School has two goals this season and she is third on the team in shots (14).
McClintock picked up two shutout wins working in goal over the weekend, including the 1-0 Texas upset. The senior from St. Louis also held Houston Baptist scoreless in a 4-0 contest on Friday. She made 10 stops against the Longhorns to set a new career high. McClintock has maintained a 0.35 goals against average and .944 save percentage this season.
Rice soccer wraps-up its current three-game homestand against crosstown foe Texas Southern on Sept. 13. Start time with the Tigers is slated for 7 pm. The Owls are off to their best start in school history. The only blemish on the team's record remains a scoreless tie on the road at Penn (Sept. 4).
