HOUSTON – After Florida Atlantic tied the match in the 83rd minute, Leah Chancey's penalty kick goal with just under five minutes to go propelled No. 25 Rice to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Owls Thursday night at Holloway Field. Rice improves to 6-1-1 (1-0-1 American) while Florida Atlantic falls to 3-7-1 (0-2 American).
How It Happened
After fending off several attempts by the visitors in the opening parts of the match, Rice's offense got rolling after a free kick from Jadyn Jaeger found Camille Quarterman who floated a shot past the keeper for the game's opening goal. Rice led 1-0 at the half.
Chancey had an opportunity to double the lead several minutes into the second half, but the Florida Atlantic keeper was there for the save. Florida Atlantic soon after had a chance off their own off a corner, but a leaping save by Kirsten Ruf kept the lead intact. It wasn't until the 82:15 mark when the away Owls tied the match. Three minutes later, an official review awarded Rice a penalty kick with Chancey converting to put Rice back on top. Rice held on the rest of the way for the 2-1 win.
Post-Match Reaction: Head Coach Brian Lee
"Our team has a great mentality, they don't stop believing, and they hold on to that [winning] feeling."
