The Owls conclude their non-conference slate Sunday at noon against Grambling State at Holloway Field. Rice resumes American Conference play on Thursday night at Temple.
Last Time Out
After Florida Atlantic tied the match in the 83rd minute, Leah Chancey's penalty kick goal with just under five minutes to go propelled No. 25 Rice to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Owls Thursday night at Holloway Field. Camille Quarterman netted the game's first goal off a free kick from Jadyn Jaeger.
In the Rankings
For the first time since the 2021 season, the Rice soccer team is nationally ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, earning the 25th spot in the rankings. The Owls were receiving votes in the past two polls, and have now entered the rankings for the week of Sept. 16, one of two schools in the American Conference to be ranked (Memphis – 9). Rice also debuted at 40 in the initial RPI of the season, the highest initial RPI ranking in program history.
Chancey's Chances
Leah Chancey has continued her offensive production for the 2025 season, already netting seven goals with five assists. She currently ranks first in the American in seven major offensive categories: assists per game, game winning goals, goals per game, points per game, shot accuracy, shots on goal per game and total assists. She's second in the conference in total goals and total points. Her 2.38 points per game ranks second in the NCAA and her 19 points ranks seventh.

Weekly Honors
Chancey earned another conference honor for the Rice soccer team this week, being named American Conference Honorable Mention. Chancey contributed to all the offense in Rice's 3-3 draw at UAB last week, finishing with a goal and two assists. Her final assist came in the final 10 minutes to tie the match. The reigning American Offensive Player of the Year, Chancey leads the team in goals (6), assists (5), and points (17) and leads the American in assists while sitting second for goals and points. This was the third consecutive week with a conference weekly honor for Chancey, coming off back-to-back Offensive Player of the Week awards last week.
Lee Earns Win 350
During Rice's 3-2 win over Oklahoma State on August 28, head coach Brian Lee recorded with 350th career win as a head coach. Coach Lee has been a head coach for 32 seasons with stops at Furman (11 seasons) and LSU (14 seasons) before taking over Rice in 2019 (7th season). Lee currently ranks 18th in wins by active DI coaches.
HTX Takeover in the RGV
The Owls had an offensive explosion at UTRGV, dropping six goals in the shutout win. The Owls' six goals are the most in a game since scoring eight against TSU during the 2020-21 season. The six goals are the most scored on the road since Rice had seven at Old Dominion in 2017.
Two Up, Two Down
Mariana Elizondo has opened the 2025 season on fire; netting goals in back-to-back matches, both being game-winning goals. The two goals tie a season high, when she scored twice back in the 2022 season (also the last time she scored before the 2025 campaign).
Take a Chance(y) On Me
Chancey checked into the TopDrawerSoccer Top 100 list to open the 2025 season at No. 67. Chancey led the conference in goals (nine), points (22), shot accuracy (.528), shots on goal per game (1.40), and was second in game-winning goals (4), third in goal per game (.45), and fourth in points per game (1.10). She had a Rice record-breaking and NCAA-leading eight consecutive matches with a goal in 2024 and to no surprise, scored the Owls' opening goal of the 2025 season.

The Owls defended Holloway Field fiercely last season, going 10-1-1 at home. The Owls have a 144-59-23 all-time home record. Rice currently has a nine-game unbeaten streak at home against non-conference opponents, going 8-0-1 in that span.
Dash Legend to South Main
Legendary Houston Dash goalkeeper and Olympic bronze medalist Jane Campbell is set to join the Rice soccer staff ahead of the 2025 season as a volunteer coach. Regarded as one of the greatest keepers in the NWSL, Campbell has appeared in over 150 games with the Houston Dash. She has also been part of the United States National Team, making the Olympic team in 2020 and serving as an alternate in 2024. She was voted as the 2023 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year.
