HOUSTON —Lukas Boandl closed his career with another honor, as he was named to the PING All-Central Region Team, announced Saturday afternoon by the Golf Coaches Association of American.
He becomes just the second Owl to earn All-Region honors, and the first since Michael Whitehead in 2011.
Boandl, ranked 95th in the latest Scoreboard rankings, was a unanimous American All-Conference selection, helping the Owls to their first NCAA Regional since 2014. He set Rice single-season records for stroke average (70.46), average vs. par (-1.11), rounds of par or better (25), and rounds in the 60's (15), becoming the first golfer in school history with at least 10 in a season twice.
The Konigsdorf, Austria native has three top five, four top 10, and nine top 20 finishes, while leading the team with 139 birdies. He tied for first at the Trinity Forest Invitational, joining Mitchell Meissner as the only Rice golfers with three career victories. He set the school record for low-36 hole score (132) after consecutive rounds of 66, and his 54-hole score of 201 is the second lowest in school history. He earned a runner-up finish at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, finishing -8 to help the Owls to the team title. At the Mossy Oak Collegiate, he tied for fifth-place, earning him American Golfer of the Week. Last week, he opened the American Championship with a 66, eventually tying for ninth-place. He closed his career tying for 19th-place at the NCAA Athens Regional.
