HOUSTON — Garet Boehm drilled his second home run of the year, and Ty Thames closed it out with 4.0 no-hit innings, as Rice defeated Florida Atlantic to even the series, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park.
FAU threatened in the first inning, putting runners on the corners with one out. However, Nick Romano was caught drifting off third base, and Aric Anderson threw behind him to Cole Green, who ran him down for the second out. John Martinez then grounded out to short to end the inning.
Florida Atlantic struck first when Ian Collier drove a pitch 413 feet over the wall in left center, his third home run of the year. It added another run in the third. With one out, Michael Perazza and Martinez both singled. Brett Patten then hit a fly ball to center that Landis Davila couldn't handle, loading the bases. Collier brought in his second run with a sacrifice fly.
The game stayed that way as Rice was held to just two hits through the first five innings. But with two outs in the sixth, JC Davis singled and Paul Smith walked. Garet Boehm then pulled the first pitch he saw over the left field wall, putting Rice in front.
In the eighth, Davis singled and Smith walked. After Boehm sacrificed them over, Mason Ashlock was intentionally walked. Landis Davila made them pay, singling through the right side to score Davis and Smith with the insurance runs.
Ty Thames earned the win in relief, allowing just one walk in 4.0 innings to move to 2-1 on the year. Kide Adetuyi took the loss (1-2).
