Owls host USF for three this weekend
How it Happened: The Cougars scored in each of the first six innings while the Owls were held hitless through the first five. They scored their first run without the benefit of a hit in the third as Hiram Bocachica Jr. led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a balk. He moved to third on a ground out and came home on a wild pitch. The run was the seventh he has scored in the last four games. Aric Anderson maximized the Owls' first hit of the night, blasting a 2-1 pitch into the trees beyond the right field wall for his second home run in the last three games. Cole Green added the Owls' second long ball of the night with a solo home to left in the eighth inning to cut the margin to 9-3. After the Cougars added a 10th run in the bottom of the eighth, the Owls struck for four in the ninth, thanks to a leadoff opposite field home run by Blaine Brown and a three-run blast by Bocachica.
Up Next: With only one-midweek game on the schedule, the Owls are off until Friday, when they open a three-game series at Reckling Park against AAC co-leader South Florida. First pitch for the opener is set for 6:30.
Notes
- Rice dropped to 62-39 in the Silver Glove series and dropped its fifth straight in the series and the season series for the fourth straight year.
- The four home runs were a season-high for the Owls and the first since they hit four vs. Texas Southern on May 14, 2024.
- Three of the four home runs were by freshmen (Bocachica, Brown and Green)… 11 of the Owls' 26 homers this year have come from first-year players.
- Austin Eppley returned to the mound for the first time since February 15 vs. Michigan (0.2, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1).
- Nolan Roycraft came on in relief of Eppley in the bottom of the seventh to strand two runners and has now stranded the last seven he has inherited.
- Bocachica's three RBI matched his career high… He has driven in six runs in the last four games and has scored at least one run in each of his last six games (eight total).
- Anderson has hit safely in three straight (5x10) with two homers and a double.
- Colin Robson was 1x4 and has hit in four of his last five (.294, 5x17).
- Brown's homer was his team-leading fifth of the season and extended his hitting streak to three games (.417, 5x12) with a double and home run.
