Silver Glove Series resumes on Tuesday
New Orleans: Matthias Haas hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to stun Rice and give Tulane a 6-5 win and a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
How it Happened: After taking the first game of the doubleheader 10-3 earlier on Saturday, Haas gave Tulane an immediate lead in the nightcap, scoring on a throwing error. Rice starter J.D. McCracken loaded the bases with two outs later in the first, but escaped with a ground out to first and then settled into a grove. He faced the minimum number of batters over the next three innings to hold the Green Wave scoreless. Tulane starter Will Clements stifled the Owls' bats through the first five innings, striking out a career-high 10, but he was pulled after hitting Hiram Bocachica with one out in the fifth. Aric Anderson greeted reliever Blaise Wilcenski with a double to bring home Bocachica and knot the game at 1-1. The Green Wave re-claimed with a two-run response to Anderson's double, only to see the lead change hand for the third consecutive half-inning as the Owls scored three times in the sixth. With one out, Blaine Brown collected his third consecutive single and then came home on Michael Zito's long home run off the top of the scoreboard in left field to tie the game, 3-3. Landon West followed with a double and scored on a single by Jacob Devenny to give the Owls their first lead of the nightcap. In keeping with the script that had played out multiple times in the series, Tulane answered Rice's offense with a threat of its own, but Jack Ben-Shoshan came on with a runner at second and one out and ended the threat with a strikeout and fly ball to left. He retired the next five Green Wave hitters before Tulane tied the game again with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth. His teammates responded with a run of their own in the top of the ninth as Jacob Devenny led off with a double, and after Cole Green replaced Devenny as a pinch runner, he came home when Bocachica slapped a single to left past a drawn-in infield expecting him to bunt the runner to third. He stole second to move into scoring position, but Rice could not add to its lead, setting the stage for the game's final turn of fate. After allowing a leadoff single, Ben-Shoshan retired the next two hitters before Haas delivered his game-winning hit. In the first game of the doubleheader, Anderson opened the scoring by drilling his first homer of the year, but Tulane moved to a 4-1 lead before Brown's RBI double and an RBI single by Devenny pulled the Owls within one. The Green Wave took control scoring six additional runs over the final three innings to win 10-3.
Up Next: Rice will play at Houston on Tuesday in the second game of the 2025 Silver Glove Series before returning home to host USF next weekend as part of Rice's annual Blue-Gray Weekend.
