Houston Takes Silver Glove Opener

Owls Open Weekend vs. Yale with Wayne Graham Day on Friday
Reckling Park: Houston erupted for 12 runs early and never looked back, downing Rice 18-1 in the first game of the 2025 Silver Glove Series on Wednesday night.
How it Happened: After the Cougars struck for four in the top of the first, the Owls looked to respond in the bottom of the first as Michael Zito singled with one out and Tobias Motley followed with a two-out single, but the inning ended with the runners and second and third on a fly out by Blaine Brown. The Owls broke up the shutout in the sixth inning when Trey Duffield led off with a double to right. He moved to third on a wild pitch and then came home on a ground out by Colin Robson. Austin Eppley followed with a single and moved to third on a single by Jacob Devenny, but the Cougars put an end to the threat with a double play and then added six runs in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Up Next: Rice opens a three-game weekend series against Yale on Friday on Wayne Graham Day as the Owls salute the remarkable career of their Hall of Fame former head coach. On-field ceremonies begin at approximately 6:10 and first pitch is set for 6:35.
Notes
- Rice fell to 30-11 in the Silver Glove Series games at Reckling Park and to 62-38 overall in the series.
- Zito was 1x2 and is now hitting .533 at Reckling Park this year (8x15).
- Hiram Bocachica was hit by a pitch to extend his streak of reaching base to nine games but saw his eight-game hitting streak end.
- Jackson Blank threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief and struck out four.
