HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's tennis team returns to the courts to host the Houston Cougars in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Match of the Week. Action from the George R. Brown Tennis Center begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
Rice comes into the match with a 4-1 record, taking down Arizona on Friday afternoon to open the weekend but falling to TCU on Saturday. In the match against Arizona, Rice earned the 4-1 victory through Fernanda Martinez's dramatic victory at the sixth line, battling in the third set and needing a tiebreaker at 6-6, taking the set and the court at 7-6 (10-8).
Houston comes into the match with a 3-0 record, opening the season with victories over UT Arlington, North Texas, and Tarleton State. Tarleton State was the first team to put up a point against the Cougars, with Houston winning 4-1.
Rice leads the overall series over the Cougars, 20-15, but Houston won the last spring meeting between the two, 4-2, in April of 2023. Prior to that, Rice had won the previous nine meetings dating back to 2006.
Wednesday evening will see Rice hosting Beer Fest at the George R. Brown Tennis Center, where the first 80 fans in the gate will get free hot dogs courtesy of True Dog Houston. Additionally, several hard beverage vendors, including 2Hoots, Tejas, Stateside, and Surfside will provide free samples of their beverages at the match.
