Rice Shuts Down Houston To Win Rivalry Match, ITA Match of the Week

HOUSTON - Rice women's tennis overpowered cross-town rival Houston on Wednesday night, 4-0, to improve to 5-1 on the season. Houston suffers its first set-back of the year with the loss.

Action started with the doubles point, where the newly-ranked (No. 85) tandem of Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez made quick work of their opponents at the first line, winning by a score of 6-2.

Both other courts found themselves in battles, fighting all the way to 6-6 draws. While both courts had a late advantage, it was Saara Orav and Francesca Maguina, who fought all the way back from a 5-2 deficit, who clinched the doubles point for Rice with a 7-6 (7-3) final at the third line, setting Rice up with an early 1-0 advantage.

In singles action, Nithesa Selvaraj powered through her opponent at the third line, earning Rice's second point of the night over the Cougars. Ratkovic was not far behind at the second line, coming up with a 6-2, 6-0 victory to inch Rice closer to the fourth point and the win.

For the second time this season, Fernanda Martinez had the clinching point for the Owls, taking down her opponent at the fifth line 6-2, 6-1, clinching the sweep for Rice and the fifth win for the Owls this season.

Rice will return to action on Friday, February 14, when the Owls host SMU as part of a doubleheader with the men's tennis team.
