HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's tennis team prepares for two matches in two days, hosting the SMU Mustangs on Friday afternoon before turning around to host the 16th-ranked Pepperdine Waves on Saturday morning.
Rice enters the match with a 5-1 record, defeating Houston in the ITA Match of the Week the last time the Owls were on the court. For the Owls' efforts, Fernanda Martinez won her first American Athletic Conference honor of her collegiate career, being named the AAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
SMU enters the match with a 4-4 record, also taking down Houston the last time they faced off. Prior to their UH match, the Mustangs fell 5-0 to their ACC mate No. 19 NC State.
Pepperdine enters with a No. 16 ITA ranking and a 2-5 record, facing four top-14 ranked teams before coming to South Main. The Waves fell to No. 11 Duke and No. 14 NC State to open the year, and fell to No. 8 North Carolina and No. 13 Tennessee in the ITA Indoor Championships, but did defeat Northwestern to finish out the tournament.
Rice is 20-26 all-time against SMU, and is currently on a six-match losing skid to the Mustang. The last win Rice had over SMU was in neutral-site action on April 20, 2013.
Rice is 1-4 all-time against Pepperdine, with the Owls only win over the Waves coming in May of 2013, when Rice defeated Pepperdine 4-3 in Palo Alto. This will be the third time the Owls host the Waves and first time since 2019.
