SMU Outlasts Rice, 4-3

HOUSTON - Rice women's tennis dropped a tight 4-3 match at the George R. Brown Tennis Center to the SMU Mustangs on Friday afternoon. Rice falls to 5-2 while SMU improves to 5-4 on the year.
The match began with doubles action, where Rice's Saara Orav and Francesca Maguina earned a victory at the third line in doubles, 6-3. However, 85th-ranked Schwartzman and Martinez fell at the first line, 6-3, to let SMU tie the doubles portion of the match. At the second line, Divna Ratkovic and Nithesa Selvaraj fell, 6-3, to see SMU claim the doubles point.
In singles, Maguina took down her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at the fourth line to tie the match up at 1-1 overall. Schwartzman gave Rice a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the first court.
SMU tied the match at 2-2 at the third line with a win over Selvaraj, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. The Mustangs then took a 3-2 lead with a tiebreaker-victory at the sixth court, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Rice fought back with Martinez's win at the fifth line, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, to tie the match at 3-3. In the end, SMU's Pittman emerged victorious at the second like with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Ratkovic to claim the match.
Rice will be back in action Saturday morning against 16th-ranked Pepperdine. Action will begin at 11 a.m.
