
Schwartzman and Martinez Earn Top-10 Victory, Rice Falls to Pepperdine 4-1

HOUSTON - Rice women's tennis fell 4-1 to the 16th-ranked Pepperdine Waves on Saturday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The loss dropped Rice to 5-3 on the year, while Pepperdine improved to 3-5.
Action began with the doubles play, where the 85th-ranked tandem of Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez knocked off the seventh-ranked tandem of Savannah Broadus and Vivian Yang, 6-3, to set Rice up with an early advantage in doubles. At the second court, Divna Ratkovic and Nithesa Selvaraj fell, 6-4, to set up a winner-take-all situation at court three. After tying the match at 5-5, Saara Orav and Francesca Maguina would bear down to take the sixth and seventh points, earning Rice the doubles point over Pepperdine.
In singles action, it was all Pepperdine, starting with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the fifth line over Allison Zipoli. Next, 16th-ranked Broadus took a 6-1, 7-5 decision from Schwartzman at the first court to give Pepperdine a 2-1 lead in the match. The Waves' third point of the match came from the second line, when Ratkovic fell 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to Grechkina. The match was sealed for Pepperdine when 80th-ranked Yang took down Selvaraj, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, at the third line, putting up Pepperdine's fourth point.
Rice will return to action on Tuesday, February 18, when the Owls take on Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in a doubleheader featuring both men's and women's squads from Rice and TAMUCC. Action starts at 1 p.m.
