#48 Rice Bounces Back With 4-1 Win Over Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The 48th-ranked Rice Owls women's tennis team bounced back after Friday's loss with a 4-1 win over the Kansas State Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at the Body First Tennis Center. The win improves Rice's record to 6-4, while Kansas State drops to 3-4.
Action began with doubles play, where the duo of Francesca Maguina and Saara Orav, who moved up to the second line, earned a 6-1 win to open the competition. Diva Ratkovic and Nithesa Selvaraj fell at the third line to Veronika Kulhava and Maria Santos by a score of 6-4, setting up a winner-take-all at the first line. 33rd-ranked Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez defeated Maralgoo Chomsomjav and Charlotte Keitel, 6-4, to earn the doubles point for Rice and the tandem's seventh victory of the duals season.
In singles, Ratkovic was the first to finish with a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Santos, pushing Rice's lead to 2-0. The Wildcats got on the board with Chomsomjav's victory over Selvaraj at the third line, 7-5, 6-3. Schwartzman pushed the lead back to two points woth a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win at the first line, and Fernanda Martinez clinched the match for Rice with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sana Garakani at the fifth line.
Maguina was in her third set against Tereza Polakova, winning the first set 6-3 but falling 5-7 in the second. Orav was just beginning her match against Kulhava, trailing 1-3, when the match was called.
Rice will return to action on Friday, Febraury 28, taking on UNLV at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
