HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's tennis team opens it's 2025 spring slate up with a short drive up to Huntsville, Texas, to take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats in the brand new Chuck and Wanda Beckner Tennis Center. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Rice was originally slated to be the first opponent the Bearkats faced at their new home, but due to the risk of severe winter weather beginning on Sunday, Sam Houston moved its doubleheader against Prairie View A&M to Friday.
Rice comes into the spring slate with momentum after a successful fall campaign. Most notably, Rice saw Diva Ratkovic win the inaugural AAC Singles and Doubles Individual Championship at the George R. Brown Tennis Center to claim her first individual conference title and represent the American in the ITA Masters Tournament in Rome, Georgia.
Rice gained another strong member of the team during the winter break, as Francesca Maguina joined the team as a mid-year enrollee. Maguina hails from Peru, where she had a very successful and decorated junior career, which included Billie Jean Cup appearances and being named a J200 and J300 finalist multiple times.
Live video and live stats will not be available for Saturday's match. The Owls will return home on Thursday, January 23, to face Lamar.
