Women's Tennis Opens Spring with 7-0 Victory at Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Rice women's tennis opened the season with a 7-0 victory over the Sam Houston Bearkats on Saturday afternoon at the new Check and Wanda Beckner Tennis Center in Huntsville, Texas.
Doubles action saw Rice's (1-0) Nithesa Selvaraj and Divna Ratkovic take the first victory of the day on court two with a 6-1 decision. Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez took down their opponents at the first court right after that with a 6-2 score, claiming the doubles point for Rice. Saara Orav and Francesca Maguina were leading the Sam Houston (1-1) duo 4-3 before the doubles matches were called off.
In singles action, Allison Zipoli claimed her first victory in over a year when she returned from injury to take down Hohmann at court four, 6-1, 6-4. Maguina followed that up with her first collegiate win, taking down Venkata Kishnan is straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Selvaraj clinched the first victory for Rice this season with a straight set victory over Schnabel at court three, 6-1, 6-4.
Ratkovic put Rice up 5-0 with her three-set victory at the No. 2 position, falling in the first set 4-6, but fighting back to dominate her opponent 6-1, 6-0 in the second and third sets and to claim the fifth point. Schwartzman claimed the sixth point with a three-set victory of her own at the No. 1 position, earning victories in her second and third set after falling in her first set (4-6, 6-2, 6-4). Orav finished off the sweep with a 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 three-set victory at the sixth court, clinching the seventh and final point for Rice.
Rice will return to action on Thursday, January 23, when the Owls host Lamar in the home opener.
