Owls Open 2024 Cross Country Season with Rice Invitational

HOUSTON – The 2024 cross country campaigns kick off Friday afternoon for the Rice men's and women's cross country teams when they host the 48th annual Rice Invitational. The race will be held at the Rice Intramural Fields with the women's 4000m race beginning at 6:20 p.m. and the men's 5200m race at approximately 6:50 p.m.
The Rice women's cross country team returns to the course after a sixth-place finish at the AAC meet last season. Led by Owls veteran Taigen Hunter-Galvan, Rice will return the team's top eight finishers from the conference meet, including Amelie Attenborough and Alex Gobran. All six runners at the NCAA South-Central Region from last season's squad are back for this season's team.
Rice is currently eighth in the USTFCCCA South Central Region poll.
The men's team is coming off a fifth-place finish at the AAC Championships at their debut meet in the conference. Led by All-Conference and All-Region returnee Gus Gannon, the Owls also return veteran runners and graduate students Elliot Metcalf, Andrew Murray and Grant Samara, in addition to Ben Tijerina, who finished 27th at last year's conference.
The Owls are currently ranked seventh for men's cross country in the USTFCCCA South Central Region poll.
