
Eight Owls Qualify for NCAA West Prelims

HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team will be well represented at the NCAA West Preliminary next week, with eight qualifying for the meet. The meet will be hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
Representing the Owls will be Gus Gannon (3000m steeplechase), Ese Amata (high jump), Matt Kumar (pole vault), Sam Welsh (discus), Shaun Kerry and Cal Abdulky (hammer throw), and Ty Hampton and Aryan Padaruth (javelin).
The Owls are coming off a great team showing in San Antonio at the AAC Championships, where Rice finished third in their debut conference outdoor meet. The Owls amassed 105 points, the third-consecutive outdoor conference meet of 100+ total points. Sam Welsh (discus), Ty Hampton (javelin) and Cal Abdulky (hammer throw) all won their respective events at AACs.
The NCAA West Preliminary meet is one of two regional events, which serve as the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Athletes gain entry into the competition by having one of the top-48 best marks of the region (East or West) in their respective events. In order to advance to the final round in Austin, Texas, an athlete must finish among the top-12 (per region) in their respective events.
Sam Welsh (fourth – discus) and Ty Hampton (seventh – javelin) will enter the meet seeded in the top 12 in their respective events.
