Rice Recently
Rice and Texas Southern have met 30 times since the series began in 1986. The schools have met 27 times in the regular season and three times in NCAA Regional action. TSU took the first postseason meeting with a 4-3 win in the first round of the 2004 Regional hosted by Rice, but the Owls came back to eliminate TSU the following day in the elimination bracket, 7-1. The last meeting between the schools came in the Baton Rouge Regional in 2017 and the Owls battled back from an early 5-0 deficit (as well as an 82-minute rain delay) to claim an eventual 13-6. The last regular season meeting came in 2012, with Rice again falling behind 5-0, this time in the first inning, before rallying to tie it in the bottom of the eighth on a single by Michael Ratterree and then win it with none out in the bottom of the 11th when Ratterree scored on a bases-loaded error. Head coach Jose Cruz Jr. was 11x13 (.846) in five games vs. TSU from 1993-95 with three homers and 16 RBI, and set a school record with five walks in a 19-4 win on February 22, 1995, while also going 2x2 with a double and three RBI in the game.
Power Plant
Jack Riedel's 14 home runs this year are the most by an Owl since the NCAA revised the standards for bats after the 2010 season. Anthony Rendon led the Owls with 26 home runs on his way to earning national Player of the Year honors in 2010 while Rick Hague was second with 16. Riedel moved to within four of matching Mark Quinn's 1995 total of 18 as the 10th-best single-season mark in school history. Quinn smashed 18 homers in 1995 as a teammate of current Owls' head coach Jose Cruz Jr.
