HOUSTON — Pierce Gallo's grand slam in the ninth inning brought Rice within one, but it was not able to complete the comeback as it fell to Florida Atlantic, 6-5, in Game One of today's doubleheader.
Florida Atlantic jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. After Jalen DeBose was hit with the first pitch of the game, he stole second and advanced to third on an error. Two batters later, he came in on John Schroeder's sacrifice fly.
Manny Garza got Rice on the board in the second inning with an opposite field home run to right. It was his second home run in as many games and his career-high sixth of the season.
FAU grabbed the lead right back in the third. DeBose and Patrick Ward led off with back-to-back singles. Schroeder then hit his second sacrifice fly to give Florida Atlantic the lead. After a double by Christian Adams, Ward scored on a passed ball. A walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases for Jake Millan, who singled up the middle to give FAU a 4-1 lead and knock JD McCracken out of the game.
Florida Atlantic added a pair of runs in the seventh inning.
In the ninth, Jack Riedel led off with a single and Nathan Becker worked a pinch-hit walk. Garza then hit a long fly ball to the wall that Millan was not able to pull down, loading the bases with no outs. FAU brought in Sam Drumheller to face Gallo, but he hit the third pitch off the scoreboard in right field for Rice's first grand slam of the season and pulling them within 6-5.
FAU again went to the bullpen, bringing in Danny Trehey, who immediately got two outs. Eric Correa then hit a double to put the tying run in scoring position. However, Ben Dukes popped the first pitch up to short, ending Rice's the game.
FAU starter Trey Beard (3-3) settled in after the Garza home run, retiring 14 of the final 16 batters to earn the win. McCracken went just 2.2 innings to take the loss (4-6).
