Owls hand Cardinals only their third loss at home this year
The Details: The Southland Conference-leading Cardinals came into the game hitting .284 on the season and sporting a 21-2 record at home, but Rice jumped out to an early lead, and nine pitchers combined to hold them to just five hits. The Owls broke out on top with four runs in the second inning. Jack Riedel opened with a walk and after a single by Garza moved him to third, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyte McDonald in his first plate appearance since April 12. Eric Correa followed with a walk and Motley doubled home Garza. Jacob Devenny brought both of them home with a single up the middle to close out the scoring. It was the sixth game in the last seven that the Owls have scored at least four runs in one inning. Riedel led off his second consecutive inning by reaching base, drilling a double to right center to open the third, and came home to score on an RBI single by Pierce Gallo. The Owls added two in the fifth on Garza's RBI double and a run-scoring single by Eric Correa that plated Garza. Garza brought home the Owls' final run with a single in the sixth, bringing home Riedel, who scored three runs in the game. Lamar cut the margin to 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth, but Reed Gallant, Jackson Blank, Tom Vincent, and Davion Hickson held them scoreless the rest of the way and the Owls won for the ninth time in the last 10 games.
