First game of doubleheader
Charlotte, North Carolina: Tobias Motley and Manny Garza each homered, but a Rice rally fell short as the Owls fell to Charlotte 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.
The Details: The 49ers scratched out a pair of runs in the first off starter Parker Smith and the Owls responded by loading the bases in the bottom of the second with two outs but could not break through. Charlotte added an unearned run in the second before Smith got into a rhythm and blanked them over the next four innings while the offense chipped away at the deficit. Tobias Motley broke the shutout in the fifth with a long leadoff homer on the first pitch. Jack Riedel drilled a one-out triple in the seventh and came home on a wild pitch to make the score 3-2. The 49ers answered with two in the seventh but Manny Garza cut the deficit to 5-3 with a solo homer to lead off the eighth. After Garrett Stratton needed just four pitches to hold Charlotte in the bottom of the eighth, Riedel smacked a one-out double and scored on a bloop single by Kyte McDonald to draw the Owls within one, the 49ers slammed the door with a double play to end the game.
Up Next: The Owls and 49ers will play the second game of the doubleheader, scheduled for 5:35 (central). The status of the final game of the series is pending weather developments in Charlotte.
