HOUSTON — Freshman Eric Correa's double in the 15th inning scored Trey Duffield and gave Rice the series with a 4-3 victory over UAB, Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park.
UAB took an early lead in the third inning. With one out and runners on first and second, Brayton Brown grounded to Tobias Motley, who threw to second to start a double play. But, Pierce Gallo's throw to first was high, allowing Brown to reach and Logan Braunschweig to score from second.
The game stayed that way as it saw both starters in a pitching duel. However, Rice finally broke through in the eighth inning. With one out, Manny Garza singled and Motley doubled. Devenny then tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
Rice had an opportunity to win the game in the ninth winning, loading the bases with one out. However, Correa and Nathan Becker struck out, sending the game to extras.
UAB grabbed the lead in the 12th. With two outs and the bases loaded, Gavin Lewis, Jr., singled up the middle, scorings two runs. But the Owls came right back in the bottom half. Motley led off with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. After Ben Dukes walked, Treyton Rank singled through the right side, scoring Motley and moving Dukes to third. Jack Riedel then hit Rice's second sacrifice fly of the game, bringing in Dukes sending the game to the 13th.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the 15th. Trey Duffield reached on an error by the third baseman allowing him to move to second. Correa then took a 1-1 pitch and drove it to right field, falling just in front and skipping past the right fielder, allowing Duffield to come in with the winning run.
Jackson Blank went 2.1 inning to pick up his first career win. Chase Ingram took the loss for the Blazers.
