Silver Glove Series
Rice and Houston began competing for the Silver Glove in 1998 and Rice has won the series in 18 of the previous 26 seasons while posting 62-35 record. The series has seen 35 of the 97 games decided by two runs or less, with Rice holding a 22-13 advantage. There have been 14 Silver Glove shutouts (Rice 9, Houston 4) with the most recent a 1-0 Cougar win at home on 4/10/18. After Houston left Conference USA prior to 2014, the three-game series had been played with home games on each campus and the final game at Constellation Field through 2019. The series returned solely to each campus in 2022 when the Houston Astros purchased the Sugarland Skeeters franchise to use as the home base for their Triple-A team.
All Silver Glovers
Five current Owls have been named to the All-Silver Glove team in their careers, including Jack Riedel, who has been named in each of the last two years. Parker Smith and Manny Garza joined Riedel on the team in 2022 while Pierce Gallo and Ben Royo joined him as returners from the 2023 team. The team is selected in a vote of the media at the conclusion of the series.
Doubling Up the Outs
Thanks to their second game with four double plays this season (3/28 at Wichita State) Rice leads the AAC and ranks seventh nationally with 29 double plays in the first 28 games. They rank 11th nationally with 1.04 per game. They finished 199th in the nation last year with 33 twin killings and 230th overall with an average of .57 per game. The last time the Owls averaged more than a double play per game was 2013 when they turned 69 in 66 games (1.08). They ranked sixth nationally in total double plays that year and 10th in average per game.
