Memphis opens eight-game homestand on Friday
Schroeder Park: Houston broke a tie with a pair of runs in the fifth and held off Rice the rest of the way to take a 4-3 win on Tuesday night and sweep the 2024 Silver Glove Series.
The Details: Houston took an early 1-0 lead on an unearned run off Owls' starter Tucker Alch, but Rice responded with runs in each of the next two innings. Manny Garza led off the second with a single and Eric Correa followed with a walk. Tobias Motely struck out but reached on a passed ball to load the bases. One out later, Ben Dukes brought Garza in on a ground out to tie the game. One inning later, Jacob Devenny led off with a double to center and Jack Riedel followed with a walk. Treyton Rank moved both up 90 feet with a sacrifice and Garza brought Devenny home on a ground out to give the Owls their first lead in the 2024 series. That lead held until the bottom of the fifth when Houston plated two runs. Rice cut the margin to one in the sixth when Tobias Motley snapped out of an 0-17 slump with an RBI single over the glove of Houston second baseman Harold Coll to score Garza, who had led off the frame with a walk. Houston threatened to extend its lead in the bottom of the eighth, but Tom Vincent came in with a runner at second and one out and struck out a pair to keep the Owls within one heading to the ninth.
Up Next: Rice returns to Reckling Park on Friday to open an eight-game homestand featuring weekend AAC series with Memphis (April 5-7) and UAB (April 12-14) and weeknight games with Incarnate Word (April 9) and Texas A&M Corpus Christi (April 10).
