
Men’s T&F Opens Outdoor Season at Three Meets

HOUSTON – The Rice men's track and field team had a great showing in their debut meets for the 2024 outdoor season, competing at the Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Invite (UH), UTSA Invitational and the TSU Relays.
At Houston, Matt Kumar had a second-place finish in the high jump while Christian Edgar finished third in the 110-meter hurdles.
Over at UTSA, Cal Abdulky opened the hammer throw season with a bang, setting a new personal record with a throw of 65.72m, moving him into second all-time at Rice, while finishing second in the event. Teammate Shaun Kerry was right behind with a third-place finish. Sam Welsh opened the 2024 season by winning the discus, while Jorge Hinojosa finished second in the shot put. Christian Edgar was second in the 110-meter hurdles, while Kevin Schott was sixth in the 400-meter dash.
At the TSU Relays, Rice finished with five runners in the top 10 in the mile, with Andrew Murray, Elliot Metcalf and Gus Gannon going 1-2-3 in the event.
