BIRMINGHAM – The Rice men's track and field team took sixth as a team in the conference debut for the Owls at the AAC Indoor Championships. Luke Ivy had a career showing, with a personal best 4536 points, while setting personal bests in five different events, finishing eighth.
On the track, Gus Gannon had a season best in the 3000m, finishing sixth, while Elliot Metcalf took eighth in the mile. Rice's 4x400m Relay team scored the last point of the meet, finishing eighth in the event.
Overall, the Owls had six podium visits while claiming one event title and one school record.
Post Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jon Warren
"This was a good catapult towards outdoors. This small group, who did very well in quite a few events, will be greatly augmented by the addition of others who did not have indoor events or indoor eligibility. I am greatly looking forward to the outdoor campaign. But before that, we still have one national indoor qualifier in Alexander Slinkman to focus on and we have many medalists and event scorers that rightfully deserve recognition from this weekend. Cal [Abdulky] and Shaun [Kerry] in the weight throw both making the podium, as well as the freshman Vincent Arousell in the hept, Matt Kumar in the pole vault, Ese Amata in the high jump, and the DMR of Andrew Murray, Connor McGrath, Davis Thames, and Elliot Metcalf all earning silver medals and all deserving special recognition. Gus Gannon and Jorge Hinojosa both just missed the podium with fourth-place finishes in the 5k and shot put, respectively. Gus even came back today and finished sixth in the 3k. We also saw some big personal bests throughout the meet including Javier Alatorre in the pole vault, and Arousell and Luke Ivy in the heptathlon."
