
Owls Drop Road Game to UAB

BIRMINGHAM – The Rice women's basketball team fell on the road to UAB 87-74 Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena. With the loss, Rice is 15-10 (9-5 AAC) on the season with four games remaining in the regular season.
Malia Fisher led the Owls with 20 points and five rebounds while Jazzy Owens-Barnett added 16 points, two rebounds and two steals. Destiny Jackson rounded out the double-digit Rice scorers with 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
As a team, Rice shot 28-of-68 (41.2%) from the floor and 7-of-19 (36.8%) from three-point range. Rice added 11-of-14 (78.6%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Fisher opened the scoring, with the Blazers countering with a three-pointer to take an early lead. Dominique Ennis and Jackson hit the next two baskets to take back the lead. Trailing 10-8, Fisher drilled a three to give Rice the lead. Following a UAB run, Hailey Adams and Jackson got the Owls within one, but UAB closed the quarter with two scores to take a 20-15 lead.
Second Quarter
The Blazers netted the opening basket of the second quarter, with Sussy Ngulefac's layup and Fisher's three following to bring the Owls within two points. Both sides traded scores until UAB held a six-point lead, with Fisher's jumper followed by Owen-Barnett and Dominique Ennis' three-pointers giving Rice a 33-31 advantage. The Blazers led 38-37 at halftime.
Third Quarter
A Blazer three opened the third quarter, with Fisher responding with a basket of her own. After a quick run gave UAB a 47-40 lead, Emily Klaczek and Owens-Barnett connected on back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to one. Owens-Barnett and Fisher continued the run to give the Owls a 50-47 lead. A quick run gave the Blazers back the lead, but Maya Bokunewicz hit a three-pointer to put the Owls back in front. An 8-0 run for the Blazers gave UAB a 59-53 lead at the end of the third.
Fourth Quarter
UAB scored the first basket of the fourth, with Fisher scoring the next three Rice baskets to counter each Blazer score. After the Blazers took a 10-point lead, Owens-Barnett and Jackson battled back to cut the deficit to six points. UAB's hot shooting would keep fending off each Rice run, eventually taking an 81-70 lead with 1:25 left. The Blazers went on to win 87-74.
