
Owls Fall in Overtime to Memphis

MEMPHIS – The Rice women's basketball team's second-half comeback fell just short 79-74 in overtime to Memphis Tuesday night at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The loss drops Rice's record to 15-11 (9-6 AAC) on the season.
Dominique Ennis led the Owls with 21 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Destiny Jackson added 17 points and five rebounds. Hailey Adams rounded out the double-digit scorers for Rice with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
As a team, Rice shot 27-of-57 (47.4%) from the floor and 4-of-14 (28.6%) from three-point range. Rice shot 16-of-23 (69.6%) from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Adams scored the game's first basket, with Jackson later following as both sides traded scores early. With the Tigers up two, Jackson drilled a three-pointer and later netted another basket to give Rice a three-point lead. With Memphis up 13-9, Sussy Ngulefac and Jazzy Owens-Barnett hit back-to-back baskets to tie the score. Memphis led 15-13 at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter
Ngulefac tied the game to open the second, but the Tigers took the lead back with a 7-0 run. After Adams hit back-to-back baskets, Memphis used another run to take a 37-25 lead. Ennis' free throw snapped the run, with Kennedy Clifton later drilling a three-pointer as the Owls trailed 39-31 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Adams cut the deficit to six to open the third, but the Tigers were able to extend their lead to 11 points at 47-36. Malia Fisher snapped the run, with Ennis following with a three-pointer to bring the Owls within six points. Another Memphis run would make it a nine-point game, but Fisher and Emily Klaczek closed the quarter strong as Rice trailed 52-47 at the end of the frame.
Fourth Quarter
Jackson's jumper made it a one-score game, but the Tigers countered again to take a 58-51 lead with 6:28 left. Fisher's three-point conversion kickstarted a 10-0 run, capped off by Klaczek's three, to give Rice a 61-58 lead with 4:58 left. Both sides traded scores and free throws until the Tigers grabbed a two-point lead at 66-64 with 1:17 left. Ennis responded with a layup to tie the game, as both sides ended regulation knotted up at 66-66.
Overtime
Memphis scored the first basket of the extra frame, with Ennis responded on the other end to tie things back up. After a defensive stop, a shooting foul and technical foul allowed Rice to grab a three-point lead, but the Tigers took back the lead for good, winning 79-74 in overtime.
