
Temple’s Three-Point Shooting Sinks Rice at Home

HOUSTON – The Rice women's basketball team fell to the hot-shooting Temple Owls 75-66 Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice falls to 15-12 (9-7 AAC) on the season, with two games remaining in the regular season.
Malia Fisher led the Owls with a career-high 24 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Destiny Jackson added 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists and a block.
As a team, Rice shot 21-of-62 (33.9%) from the floor and 4-of-18 (22.2%) from three-point range. The Owls added a 20-of-26 (76.9%) showing from the free throw line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Temple opened with a 9-2 run before Jackson scored the first field goal for Rice. Trailing by nine, back-to-back three-pointers by Emily Klaczek and Trinity Gooden cut the deficit to three, with Fisher following with a layup to make it a one-point game. After Temple took a four-point advantage, Hailey Adams and Fisher evened the score, but the visitors closed on a 10-0 run to take a 26-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
The Owls in red opened the second quarter with a score before Sussy Ngulefac snapped the Temple run. Trailing by 14, Jazzy Owens-Barnet kickstarted a 7-0 run to cut the deficit in half. The two sides traded scores the rest of the way, but Temple reclaimed a 10-point lead at 41-31 lead at halftime.
Third Quarter
Jackson and Klaczek countered each Temple score early in the third. After Temple took a 12-point lead, Klaczek hit a three-point to bring the Owls within single digits. Maya Bokunewicz later drilled a three to cut the deficit to seven. A late run to close the third gave Temple a 63-49 lead.
Fourth Quarter
After Temple extended their lead, Bokunewicz started a quick 6-0 run to get within 11 points. Fisher and Jackson attacked the deficit from the free throw line until back-to-back Fisher baskets made it an eight points game with a minute left. Temple was able to close out the game at the free throw line to take the 75-66 win.
