West named MVP
Landon West gave the White team all the runs they would need with a first inning single as four pitchers combined to shutout the Blue to take a 3-0 win in the annual Fall Ball World Series game at Reckling Park on Friday night.
After the first two batters were retired in the top of the first, Austin Eppley ripped a double to left and then came home on a single by West. They added two more runs in the second as Jack Peterson and Michael Zito each singled to put runners on the corners. Cole Green pushed a bunt up the first base line to drive in Peterson and one out later, Zito scored on an error to close out the scoring.
"It's hard to screw it up when they throw a shutout," said pitcher Micah Davis, who paired with fellow pitcher Davion Hickson to manage the White squad. "I thought we had put together a pretty good team and it was great to see Landon drive in the early run and then our pitchers pitched their butts off."
Von Baker, Reed Gallant, Tom Vincent and Mark Perkins combined to hold the Blue to four hits on the night.
Baker dodged an early bullet in the bottom of the first when Jacob Devenny drew a walk and Treyton Rank followed with a single. He coaxed the first of two double plays by the White on the night and followed with a strikeout to end the frame.
The Blue put their leadoff hitters on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh but could not move a runner past second until the seventh when pinch runner Tanner Holland was thrown out at the plate to end the inning while trying to score from second on Trey Duffield's pinch hit single.
West added a triple later in the game and was named the games MVP.
Davis was aware he had never lost a Fall World Series and was happy to see that streak be extended.
"This is always my favorite week of the fall, and we all look forward to it. It really adds a level of friendly competition. I really did want to go 5-0 and kind of establish myself as a good World Series player and coach," he said with a smile while holding his share of the steak dinner that went to the winning side.
