COLLEGE STATION - The Rice Owls women's cross country team had another strong showing this weekend with a 10th-place team finish at another competitive meet at the Arturo Barrios Invitational at Texas A&M. The team made an impressive step towards the conference championship in two weeks, with nine athletes setting personal bests today.
The Owls finished with six runners under 21 minutes for a 6k race, the first time in program history Rice has done so.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jim Bevan
"Top nine runners all had lifetime best times. I am very happy with our development and we are getting better throughout this fall. We are getting closer to key teams with a month left until regionals. Tremendous performances by Daphne, Oliwia, Alex, Taigen, Amelie, Heidi, Brooklyn, Molly and Katlyn. We went one to five in 29 seconds! We had nine personal bests today, it is truly unique to all take a step forward. Our two freshmen continue to impress. It was the first 6k race for them of their lives, and both went through the 5k en route faster than their pb's for that distance! I am very happy with our race today."
Daphne Mayer was the top Rice runner in 46th with a time of 20:23.0 for the 6k. Freshman counterpart Oliwia Kopeć was right behind in 53rd with a time of 20:31.5.
Alex Gobran (68th), Taigen Hunter-Galvan (74th) and Amelie Attenborough (82nd) rounded out the Rice scorers. The Owls had six finish in the top 100, with Heidi Nielson finishing in 92nd.
Rice saw two AAC foes at the meet, with North Texas finishing 15th as a team and UTSA 41st.
The Owls will be back in action on Nov. 2 at the AAC Championships, hosted by Wichita State.
