Owls Take Sixth at Chile Pepper Festival
9/29/2023 7:29:00 PM | Men's Cross Country
FAYETTEVILLE - The Rice Owls men's cross country team continued their strong start to the season with a sixth-place showing at the Chile Pepper Festival Friday afternoon, hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Post-Meet Reaction: Head Coach Jon Warren
"Gus did great. It was kind of hot and it affected pretty much everyone in the race, but Gus got in a good position and help it very well. He led a solid team performance with really good runs from Grant, Jackson and Ben. I would say it was a good day, one that is a positive for most athletes and one that we can build on."
Freshman Gus Gannon led the Owls for the second-straight meet, with a 12th-place finish with a time of 24:35.1 for the 8k race. Grant Samara had a top 50 finish, ending 44th with a time of 25:17.5. Close behind was the trio of Jackson Moran, Ben Tijerina and Davis Thames to close out the Rice point scorers.
Gannon's 12th-place finish was the highest mark by any freshman at the meet and was just seconds away from a top-10 finish.
No. 22 Arkansas won the meet, with all placers finishing in the top six. This was the first meet for Rice against AAC foes, with North Texas finishing 15th as a team. Tulsa also had runners compete, but did not have their full team running.
The Owls will be back in action in two weeks at Texas A&M for the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Oct. 13.
