Series resumes at 6 p.m. on Saturday
Bowling Green, KY: WKU broke a 4-4 tie with a two-out double in the bottom of the 10th to take the opening game of the weekend series with Rice on Friday night.
The Details: The Hilltoppers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with one run in the first and three in the second, but Rice starter Parker Smith settled in and worked into the eighth allowing his teammates to draw even and send the game into extra innings. The Owls cut the deficit to one with three runs in the fifth. With one out, Drew Holderbach singled up the middle and he came around to score on a double to center by Manny Garza. After Max Johnson's drive up the middle was caught for the second out of the inning, Jack Riedel and Ben Royo doubled in consecutive at-bats to drive home Garza and Riedel. Meanwhile, Smith, who had allowed seven men to reach in the first two innings, settled into a groove, retiring WKY facing the minimum from the third to the sixth and then working around one-out doubles in the sixth and seventh. Holderbach tied it with his fifth homer of the year in the sixth, but the Owls did not collect another hit until Riedel led off the 10th with his third hit of the game.
