Houston: Jacob Devenny reached base three times and gave Rice a lead it never relinquished as the Owls blanked LA Tech 4-0 on Saturday night to gain a split in the doubleheader against the Bulldogs.
The Details: Game Two: After slapping a pinch-hit single as part of a ninth-inning rally in the first game of the day against the Bulldogs, Devenny earned his first career start in the field in the nightcap and led off with a single. Aaron Smigelski drove him home with a one-out double to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Tom Vincent started and matched his career high with three innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. Cristian Cienfuegos, Tyler Hamilton, Krishna Raj and Jack Ben-Shoshan combined to strikeout out 10 in the final four innings while limiting the Bulldogs to a pair of hits. LA Tech was held hitless until the sixth when Ethan Bates tripled with one out, but Raj struck out Philip Matula and coaxed a fly ball to second by Dalton Davis to preserve the 1-0 lead. Rice extended the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Owls loaded the bases with one out and Manny Garza and Pierce Gallo each drove in a run with infield singles and Devenny picked up an RBI in his second consecutive game with a bases-loaded walk.
Game One: Guy Garibay slugged a solo homer in the bottom of the second, but the Owls fell just short of overcoming a four-run fifth by LA Tech, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to fall 5-4. Manny Garza doubled home Ben Royo who reached on a one-out error. Jack Riedel drove in pinch runner Christian Salazar with a single and advanced into scoring position on an error and scored on Devenny's pinch-hit single to bring the winning run to the plate only to see the rally fall short.
