Houston: Jack Riedel's two-run, bases-loaded single highlighted a four-run seventh as Rice downed Lamar 7-3 at Reckling Park on Tuesday night.
The Details: Freshman Garrett Stratton made his collegiate starting debut against the Cardinals and was tagged for a solo run in the top of the second after a scoreless opening frame. Riedel sparked an immediate response by the Owls when they came to the plate. He singled with one out, advanced to third on a double by Ben Royo and scored on a ground out to first by Paul Smith. Freshman Ryland Urbanczyk took over for Stratton in the third and worked four spotless innings while Connor Walsh put in front with a fielder's choice RBI in the third and his eighth home run of the year in the sixth. The Cardinals tied the game with a pair of sac flies in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for the Owls' decisive at-bats in the bottom of the frame. Jacob Devenny doubled and Pierce Gallo walked to open the inning. One out later Drew Holderbach walked to load the bases and Guy Garibay Jr. drew the third walk of the inning to bring home Devenny and break the tie. After Walsh struck out, Riedel foiled three two-strike pitches before drilling a clean single to right to score Gallo and Holderbach. He then teamed up with Garibay on a delayed steal, allowing Garibay to score the seventh run for the Owls while he moved up to second base. Krishna Raj worked 1.1 scoreless innings to improve to 2-1 with the win.
