DBU Takes First Two of Series
4/29/2023 8:16:00 PM | Baseball
Series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday
The Details: Rice took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth when Friday's suspended game resumed and after holding the Owls off the board, the Patriots tied the game with a two-run homer in the ninth. They stranded the potential go-ahead run at third when Jack Ben Shoshan came on to get the final out with a runner at third. The game remained tied until the 12th when DBU struck for three runs. Ben Royo welcomed DBU closer Kyle Amendt, who has allowed two earned runs all season, with a single to open the bottom of the 12th and Paul Smith followed with a walk to bring tying run to the plate. After two were retired, Aaron Smigelski drove in one with a single to bring the winning run to the plate but Amendt ended the game with a strikeout. In the regularly-scheduled game, Rice starter J.D. McCracken worked out numerous jams while striking out a career-high seven in five innings, allowing just an unearned run. Jack Riedel gave McCracken a 2-1 lead with pair of solo homers, but DBU broke the game open by scoring eight runs in the eighth inning to win its 10th straight C-USA game.
Notes
- The 12 innings in the first game was the longest for the Owls this season and their longest since playing 12 innings at Houston last May.
- Rice fell to 1-3 in extra innings this year and has lost its last three extra-inning games at home. The Owls' last win in extras was vs. Incarnate Word on 4/13/21
- Rice pitchers have struck out 27 Patriots in the first two games of the series, their best back-to-back effort this season.
- Rice has hit four homers in the series, including three in the second game on Saturday. The Owls had hit four homers in their previous 10 games.
- Riedel's two homers were a career-high and matched the Owls' season high. Connor Walsh hit a pair vs. UTRGV on March 7.
- Riedel was 5x9 in the two games, extending his hitting streak to seven games (.464, 13x28) during which he has raised his average from .202 to .258.
- Manny Garza returned to action after missing last weekend's series at Middle Tennessee and was 3x6 in the two games.
- Ben-Shosan has not allowed a run in his last five appearances (5.1,1,0,0,4,5).
Up Next: The Owls and Patriots will close out their series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Rice will close out its current homestand on Wednesday when they host Houston for Game Two of the 2023 Silver Glove Series at 6:30 p.m.
