Owls Host Houston on Wednesday at 6:30
Houston: Dallas Baptist rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to down Rice 4-3 on Sunday at Reckling Park and give the 19th-ranked Patriots a sweep of the weekend series.
The Details: DBU opened the scoring with a solo homer in the top of the first but the Owls immediately responded with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom half of the frame. After the first two hitters were retired, Aaron Smigelski slapped a single to center and Jack Riedel continued his torrid recent pace at the plate with a double down the left-field line to move Smigelski to third. Manny Garza followed with a single to right to score both and give the Owls a 2-1 lead and a sac fly by Riedel in the third gave the Owls a two-run cushion that would hold up until the ninth. Cristian Cienfuegos opened the game and worked the first two innings. Ryland Urbanczyk followed Cienfuegos and worked a pair of clean innings before exiting with the bases loaded and one away in the fifth. Justin Long, who had tossed two shutout innings against DBU on Friday night before the game was suspended in the bottom of the eighth, preserved the lead by striking out leadoff hitter Jace Grady and then coaxing a ground out by Ethan Mann to end the inning. Long held the Patriots in check until the ninth, striking out a career-high five. He was relieved after allowing a solo homer to open the ninth and DBU added two more on a second homer to erase the Owls' second two-run lead in the ninth inning during the series. Rice attempted to close the game as it began, with some two-out offensive production. Jacob Devenny singled to center with two away off Patriots closer Kyle Amendt and Ben Royo followed with a walk. Christian Salazar worked the count to 3-2, but Royo was picked off first to end the game.
