Owls Fall in Extra Innings
5/4/2023 12:09:00 AM | Baseball
UH scores three in the 12th to retain the Silver Glove
The Details: Rice twice came back from two-run deficits and then sent the game to extra innings with a run in the bottom of the ninth in an effort to even the Silver Glove Series at one game each. After Houston struck for two in the top of the first, the Owls answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Pierce Gallo singled and Jack Riedel followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Connor Walsh drove both in with a double of his own. The Cougars went back up by two with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, but Ben Royo got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning with his 10th homer of the year. He became the seventh Rice freshman to hit 10 home runs in a season and the first since Michael Ratterree in 2010. Rice tied it one inning later when Drew Holderbach executed the squeeze bunt to bring home Walsh. Houston jumped back in front with a run in the sixth, but could not increase the advantage as Mark Perkins came on in relief in the seventh and matched his career high with four scoreless innings, striking out a career-best four. The Owls loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth and tied the game on a ground out by Holderbach, but the threat ended there.
Notes
- Rice fell to 5-7 in midweek games and 1-4 in extra-inning games.
- The teams combined to use 21 pitchers in the game, with 11 Owls and 10 Cougars taking the mound.
- The win was just the 11th for the Cougars at Reckling Park since it opened in 2000 with a win by Houston.
- Perkins' four innings were the longest outing by any pitcher in the first two games of the Silver Glove Serie. He allowed just one hit over his four innings of work and matched his career-best effort of four innings at Charlotte last season. He has not allowed a run in his last four appearances.
- Riedel's first-inning double extended his hitting streak to nine games, matching his career-high set last year. He is hitting .432 (16x37) during his streak.
- Royo's 10 homers match Austin Bulman's final total from last year. The last Owl with more than 10 homers in a season was Andrew Dunlap, who hit 13 in 2019.
