San Diego, California: San Diego State raced out to an early lead and rolled to a 5-2 win over Rice at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday.
Doubles: The Aztecs moved swiftly to secure the opening point with 6-2 wins at the second and third lines.
Singles: San Diego State picked up where it left off in doubles, winning first sets in singles on five of six courts and clinched victory by holding its advantage on four of those five courts. Maria Budin shook off her first set loss at the fifth line with a 6-2 win in the second set and then outlasted the Aztecs' Andreea Velcea 11-9 in a super set tiebreaker. Saara Orav rebounded from dropping her second set at the sixth line to roll past SDSU's Rania Azziz 10-5 in her deciding tiebreaker set to close out the action and the Owls road trip.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "Kudos to San Diego State, they played a tough match. We have to be more competitive in doubles and we will be working hard at that this week before we host FAU next weekend."
Up Next: The Owls return to the George R. Brown Tennis Center next Sunday to host Conference USA foe FAU at 11 a.m.
