Owls travel to Colorado next weekend
In Brief: Rice captured the doubles point for the second straight match, but UCSB rallied to down the Owls 4-2 in Boca Raton, Florida on Monday. The Gauchos finished the weekend of action hosted by FAU with a 3-0 record while Rice fell to 1-2.
The Details: For the third consecutive day, the Owls found themselves in a marathon match lasting nearly 3 ½ hours. While the Gauchos took four of six first sets in singles, Rice forced third sets on three of four courts but could not extend that momentum into the final sets.
Doubles: Kabeer Kapasi and Yasha Zemel improved to 3-0 and clinched the point by winning the tiebreaker, 7-4. Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear opened the doubles by winning at the second line and the Owls closed the weekend with a 5-2 record in doubles.
Singles: Emir Sendogan quickly extended the Owls' lead to 2-0 with his third consecutive win of the weekend, 6-2, 6-4 over UCSB's Lucca Lin. UCSB came back to win thanks to winning all three third sets.
Efe Ustundag: "After starting off on such a high note on Saturday, these last two (matches) really sting. We knew coming in that all the teams were pretty evenly matched, but I don't think anyone expected three straight matches of over three hours. We might have run out of gas some today and we definitely didn't have the same energy in the third sets. It was disappointing to see us respond as we did to force third sets, but not keep the pressure on in the third. We have UCSB some opportunities and they took advantage. I thought we played better and better doubles each day. UCSB had won the point in their first two matches and we came out and played great on all three courts."
Up Next Rice (1-2) travels to Colorado next weekend to take on Air Force (Friday at 6:30) and Denver (Sunday at noon). The Owls open the 2023 home dual season on January 27 when they host Elon at 1 p.m.
