Five touchdowns and two field goals
Rice held its first scrimmage of training camp on Saturday at Rice Stadium, with the offense striking for five touchdowns over the course of 113 plays.
TJ McMahon found transfer Tyson Thompson for a 39-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and he added scoring tosses of 65 yards to Kobie Campbell and six yards to Bradley Rozner while completing 12-20 for 186 yards. Wiley Green connected with Jack Bradley on a 10-yard score and was 13-22 for 126 yards. Freshman Quinton Jackson burst through the line for a 43-yard scoring sprint while Tim Horn (50 yards) and Zachary Adams (33 yards) closed out the scoring with field goals.
"When you can put the ball in the box five times in a scrimmage that's pretty good, especially against who I think our defense is, which is the best group we have had here," Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren said. "We've certainly had days (in the past) where we certainly didn't sniff the end zone five times in a scrimmage."
The Owls'day opened early on Saturday with their annual photo day and with an eye on the weather, which held off for both the outdoor team photo in the morning as well as during the late-morning scrimmage.
"It felt like training camp, it's been like training camp and it was great to get out here get the work in we needed and got a little help from the weather in being able to stay outside," Bloomgren noted.
"I thought we had some guys step up and do some really cool things today," he noted. "On offense, Ari Broussard had a great day today. Luke McCaffrey came through in some clutch times. Our quarterbacks had some big plays down the field. We had some things that certainly were not up to our standards from an execution standpoint, but we had zero turnovers in 113 plays and that's a real positive right there. On defense, when you look at what Sean Fresch is doing at the corner position, I think it's outstanding. Treshawn Chamberlain is a guy we expect to see all the time and we are seeing that. Josh Pearcy had a great day and he and KK (Kenneth) Orji accounted for three sacks together."
After 11 days of relative quiet on campus during the start of camp, activities ramp up on Sunday with the arrival of the incoming freshman class. Members of the football team will be on hand at their colleges to help the new arrivals move in and they the freshmen team members will participate in various O-Week activities with their classmates while also continuing to prepare for the Owls season-opener at USC on September 3.
