Take the finale over UTSA
The Details: Rice took advantage of three Roadrunners errors in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead and added a pair in the third after UTSA had cut the lead to 3-2 in the second. The Roadrunners chased Owls starter Thomas Burbank in the fourth, but reliever Brandon Deskins came on in relief with the tying run at the plate to shut the door. He held UTSA off the scoreboard through the seventh to pick up his second win of the year. After UTSA struck for four runs in the top of the eighth off Matthew Linskey to cut the lead to 9-7, the Owls answered with seven runs of their own to put the game out of reach. Guy Garibay Jr. opened the scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk and Austin Bulman followed with an RBI single. Aaron Smigelski drew the second bases-loaded walk of the inning to plate the third run and Becker followed with a two-run single. Gallo drove home the sixth run with a ground out and Jack Ben-Shoshan added his second RBI in as many games with a single to close out the scoring. David Shaw came to retire UTSA in order the ninth to end the game.
Notable:
- The win snapped a nine-game Conference USA losing streak for the Owls (11-24, 4-11) while their 16 runs and 17 hits were their most in conference play since they scored 19 runs on 17 hits at Charlotte in 2019. It was their largest output in a conference game at home since they scored 18 runs on 20 hits at Reckling in 2018.
- Deskins allowed just one hit and struck out three while matching his longest relief outing of the year.
- Gallo had a career-high four hits along with matching his career-best of four RBI (set vs. Sam Houston on 3/16). He is the fourth Owl to collect four hits in a game this year Guy Garibay Jr. has two, while Austin Bulman and Manny Garza each have one.
- Bulman tied his career high by scoring four runs, matching his effort vs. Marshall earlier this year.
- Garibay was 5x13 over the weekend, scoring four runs and driving in four as well.
- Ben-Shoshan made this third consecutive start in centerfield and was 1x5 and drove in a run for the second consecutive game. He was 4x12 in the three starts against the Roadrunners.
- Jack Riedel saw his career-best hitting streak stopped at nine games.
