Riedel's three hits and first career homer lead the Owls
BOX SCORE
In Brief: Jack Riedel collected three hits including his first career home run, but Houston broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the eighth and went on to take the first game of the 2022 Silver Glove Series 10-7 at Reckling Park on Tuesday night.
The Details: After Houston took an early 2-0 lead, Rice jumped in front with three in its half of the third. A pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases and with one out, Austin Bulman came home on a passed ball. Aaron Smigelski, making his return to the lineup after missing five games, drove in a pair with a double to right-center. The double extended his career-opening hitting streak to eight games. Houston jumped back in front with three in the top of the fourth but tied it with single runs in the fourth and fifth. Houston re-took the lead 6-5 in the top of the sixth, but Riedel knotted the game again, slamming the first pitch over the fence in right-center for his first career home run. Garrett Zaskoda tossed three hitless innings to keep the game tied heading into the final frames before the Cougars scored three in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Notable:
- The game was the highest-scoring game in the series at Reckling since 2012 when Houston won the first game 11-6.
- Zaskoda fanned four in three innings, matching the career-high he set last season in a start at Texas A&M.
- Riedel was 3x3 with a home run and double after entering the game in the fourth inning as a defensive replacement.
- Smigelski was 2x4 with a walk in his first game back after missing five games. He has hit in each of the eight games in his career (six starts).
- Guy Garibay double was his sixth of the season, matching his total in 48 games as a true freshman. He has nine extra-base hits in the first 13 games (6doubles and 3 homers). He had 13 extra-base hits in 48 games as a freshman.
- Austin Bulman extended his hitting streak to four games and drove in his team-leading 10th run. He has reached base in 11 of 13 games this season.
Up Next: The Owls' 17-game homestand enters its penultimate weekend, as Texas Tech makes only its second regular-season appearance at Reckling Park with a three-game series that starts at 6:30 on Friday. The Red Raiders only previous regular-season appearance at the Owls' home field came in 2013.
