Tempe, AZ Arizona overcame the loss of the doubles point by taking three of four three-set matches and edge Rice 4-3 at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Friday.
Doubles: The Owls emerged with the first point of the day by taking close battles at the second and third lines, 6-4.
Singles: Anna Bowtell raced to a quick win at the fifth line to increase the Owls lead to 2-0, but after the Wildcats jumped on the scoreboard with a win at one, the remaining matches would be extended to three sets. The team split the first sets on those four courts, but in each case, the other responded with a win to force third sets. Maria Budin, who dropped her first set at the sixth line 6-1, rallied to win her next two sets 6-3, 6-2 and give Rice a 3-2 lead, but the Wildcats surged to win the last two and take the match. Bowtell improved to 10-2 in dual singles, reaching double figures for the fifth consecutive year.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "We started off well with a solid doubles point and getting the quick point from Anna. As scores show, it was a tight battle on the other five courts with lots of lead changes and momentum swings for both teams. Definitely a tough one to lose but now our focus is getting back up, learning from this match, and putting it all out there again tomorrow."
Up Next: Rice wraps up the road trip on Saturday by facing No. 32 Arizona State (March 26) at 1 p.m.
