Rice Takes Series Opener at Marshall, 7-2

HUNTINGTON, W.V. — Austin Bulman went 4-for-5 with two home runs and Rice's pitching allowed just four hits as the Owls took Friday afternoon's series opener at Marshall, 7-2.
The Story
Rice grabbed an early lead in the second inning. With two down, Pierce Gallo sent a shot over the right field wall for his first career home run, a solo shot. The Owls added to their lead in the third inning. With one out, Austin Bulman hit his fifth home run of the season over right center. After Nathan Becker and Connor Walsh walked, Johnny Hoyle brought in Becker to extend Rice's lead to 3-0. Rice starter Cooper Chandler retired the first seven batters, but in the bottom of the inning, Marshall touched him for a pair of solo home runs. Bulman added his second solo shot of the day in the fifth inning. The Owls added a pair of two-out runs in the seventh inning. Nathan Becker dropped a pop-up into left field, scoring Bulman from second. Connor Walsh then followed with his first triple of the season to double Rice's advantage. Walsh added his second RBI hit in the ninth on a single that scored Bulman.

• Rice won its road conference opener for the first time since 2016, a 9-4 victory at UTSA.
