Deciding game at noon on Sunday
The Details: After a pair of scoreless frames to open the game, the Blazers broke the ice with three runs in the third off Rice starter Roel Garcia. The Owls offense broke through with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Aaron Smigelski, who opened the inning by being hit by a pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly by Connor Walsh. Gallo then followed with an RBI single. Drew Woodcox plated the third run win a single and Garibay put the Owls in front with a sacrifice fly. The Blazers responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth only to have Gallo tie the game with his second RBI single of the day. Gallo has driven in a run in five consecutive games (10 total) after driving in two in the first 16 games of the year. UAB took the lead for good with three in the top of the sixth and held off any further threats by the Owls, who stranded 11 runners on the day.
Notable:
- The Owls' four-run fourth inning was their ninth inning in which they have scored three or more runs over the last 35 innings after having only six such innings in the first 16 games.
- Smigelski doubled in his first at-bat of the day and has hit in 13 of his first 14 games as a collegian.
- Garibay was hitless in one official at-bat, but his two RBI extended his team lead to 18.
- Nathan Becker reached base on four of five appearances (two walks and two hits) and has now reached base in 15 consecutive games, matching the longest streak by the Owls since 2019
