Owls Fall to Cardinals in Extra Innings

In Brief: Aaron Smigelski slammed his first career home run and drove in four runs, but an eighth-inning rally went for naught as Lamar tied the game in the ninth and went on to win 8-6 in 11 innings at Reckling Park.
The Details: The cold damp conditions remained in place at Reckling on Saturday and both teams were held off the board for the first three innings. Rice starter Roel Garcia worked his way out of multiple jams but Lamar's Adam Wheaton held the Owls without a hit until Connor Walsh, who was making his season debut, singled to lead off the fourth. Two out later he trotted home in from of Smigelski who drilled a shot over the right-field wall. The Cardinals tied the game in the fifth and then extended their lead to 5-2 in the sixth and they carried that advantage into the eighth before Rice unleashed a second round of two-out offense. Manny Garza reached on a wild pitch on a third strike and Walsh followed with a single. Austin Bulman walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Smigelski drove a ball to left to drive in a pair of runs and Drew Woodcox followed with a two-run single of his own to put Rice in front 6-5. Lamar got the run back with a leadoff home in the ninth and added a pair of runs in the 11th. Rice put two on with one out in the bottom of the 11th but failed to score.
Notable:
- Smigelski has hit in each of his first five collegiate games (7x16) with a pair of doubles and his home run and has driven in five runs.
- Drew Woodcox has hit in his last four games (6x18) and has driven in a run in both games of the series.
- Austin Bulman's walk in the eighth extended his on-base streak to all six games this year.
- Antonio Cruze has hit in three straight and in four of six this year.
- Manny Garza made his first career start and scored one run.
- Rice has now homered in seven straight games at Reckling Park dating back to last season. The Owls homered in their last five games at home in 2021 and have a long ball in each of the first two this season.
- Guy Garibay has hit five of his six career homers at Reckling Park, including the last five in a row. He hit his first career homer at Louisiana on 2/28.
